The International Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons goes into effect on January 22. The United States has not yet signed the treaty.
In the wake of Pope Francis’ powerful appeal for a world that is free from atomic warfare, and his affirmation that not only the deployment, but also the possession of nuclear weapons is immoral, the Catholic Bishops of the United States issued a statement on November 24, 2019 calling on the United States “to exercise global leadership for mutual, verifiable nuclear disarmament”.
The statement, signed by Bishop David Malloy, Chairman of USCCB’s Committee on International Justice and Peace, notes that the theme of Pope Francis’ Apostolic Journey to Japan this in November, 2019 was “Protect All Life”. “In Nagasaki and Hiroshima” Bishop Malloy writes, “the Holy Father gave a powerful witness to the grave threat posed to human life by nuclear weapons. Following in the footsteps of Saint John Paul II, and reiterating the teaching of his predecessors, Pope Francis called for a world without nuclear weapons”.
To learn more about this important step toward the elimination of nuclear weapons, the Social Justice and Peace Committee invites you to watch a documentary, “The Beginning of the End of Nuclear Weapons” on Friday, January 22 from 7 to 9 pm.
